german shephard nibbling at leg

i have a 4 yr old german shephard and i noticed she is nibbling at one of her front legs. There is a small bald patch where she has been licking and it looks sore. Do i need to take her to the vets or is there anything i can put on it to help it heal?

More likely than not any lotions or potions you apply to this sore will only have the effect of making her lick it more. What you need to do here is stop her licking it. The best way to do that is by using an elizabethan collar which are available from some pet shops. For a GSD you are likely to need a 30 or 25cm one. You may be able to imrovise using a 2 or 3 gallon plastic bucket with the bottom cut out and fastened to her collar. Gently bathing the sore with a saline solution (1 tablespoonful salt to a pint of boiled water) may help. If you manage this and it is not looking any less sore by monday then you need to get her to a vet. There may be a surgery tomorrow morning so no harm in ringing the vet early in the morning.

Thank you for your advice. I bathed her leg with boiled salt water, and managed to get in the vets this morning. She has got an infection in her sore, so they've given her gel, antibiotics and a huge collar!!!
