Any Ideas part one

Just wondered if anyone has experienced anything like this or similar and could offer an explanation or any advice as to the cause. My friends 11 year old yorkie has been checked by a vet but they cannot find anything wrong or an explanation, he's had heart tests/blood tests, you name it he's had it. He's been "fainting" about once or twice a year from 2003. They happen at about the same time, during the night and he goes very stiff and dead like, very ridged out streatched front legs, wide staring eyes, very out of it, it takes him about 10 minutes to fully recover and then he's fine. All the tests have come back normal. The vets only comment was that he could be going into a deep sleep and then waking up fast but his heart can't catch up.

Part two...with the speed of waking
and thus making him faint. He is fine in every other way, eating and going to the toilet normally, playing and seems ok in himself, she's just concerned when this happens as it's pretty frightening and wanted to know if this is something any yorkie/dog owners have come across before. He's has fainted twice in 2003, once in 04,once in 05 and twice this year already. It all happens between 9.30pm- 4.30am. She has been told on another forum that it might be congested heart failure but wouldn't the tests/vet have picked up on this and treated it.Thanks for all your help and advice. Also someone mentioned high sodium/potassium levels could be the cause, all advice appreciated.

Just to add her dog is fed on Hills ID tinned and dry because of tummy troubles and has done well on it although having read the sodium/potassium levels on both they do seem high and combined even higher. Been advised that sodium should be no higher than 0.18% and potassium 0.75%. The tinned food is Sodium 0.12%, potassium 0.27% and the dry food is sodium 0.42%, potassium 0.87%. Advice appreciated. thanks Tony

Sounds more like a fit than a faint if he is going rigid. Sodium/potassium ratios seem fine but may be worth contacting Hills helpline on 0800 290999.

what time of day do you feed? could this be pain from sever indigestion or postural, cardiac / vascular pressure from full tum , hypotension ? can you snap him out of it? try smaller meals, try winding like a baby? sounds like a tuff little cookie keep a diary for the days this happens listen out for any extraneous sounds when it happens he might just be rigid with fear?
