Swollen right front leg with limping

I noticed my dog limping 3 days ago and found out that the right front limb is the affected area. He is unable to support his weight on it thus he limps. He allows me to palpate it. I am unable, though, to identify which area on that limb is affected since there is no swelling and there is deformities. I checked for any splinters on lacerations on his paws but it's clean. So i gave him a pain medication and he slept all throughout the night. The next day, the limping seemed to lessen so I worried less. He even started to play and run again with minor limping. But then today, the limping is again getting more pronounced. I palpated his leg and it is now swollen, mostly all over above his foot. I applied casting (pre wrapped it then taped it) then gave pain medication. I am not sure though if it is the right thing to do. I am also applying ice compression. I hope i am not doing more harm to it. Is there some more things I need to do before I bring him to the vet? The vet is far from my place and as much as possible, i want to do the treatment myself. Thank you so much!

Stuart the vet will answer this but in the meantime you must stop him from running around at all.

A dog's leg ./ paw rarely swells and in my experience it is only a break or a severe infection or a snake bite / wasp / bee sting that will make it swell.

I can appreciate that the vet is far from your place, but be guided by the dogs general well being at this moment until Stuart sees this.

If he is lethargic or not eating / drinking then I think it is best he is on his way to a vet.

The last time I saw anything like the sound of your dogs, it was a streptococcus infection and it was really bad. So be careful.

infection bruising wound a sprain or strain With this history I an inclined to go for wound/bruising/infection but needs checking out so vet tomorrow if not back or almost back to normal Do not use any human pain medication he is safer limping!
