hello, my dog ( Rottweiler) Hamlet, has a very itchy ear, when I go to the vet she gives me ear cleaner and canurol, this has not worked so far, he is still shaking his head. it is brown when I clean it with black bits in it, it has been going on now for a couple of months, it is getting worse not better ,it is now very distressing for him.

I suggest that you request a referral to a specialist,
Many chronic ear conditions are associated with ear mites. Canaural should be effective against ear mites though it only kills the adults Probably by drowning! it is also important to treat all the ears that may at some time in the month be in contact with the affected ears. Yes all the furry ears in the household. Because the mites will be harboured in many dogs and cats that show no signs at all of being infested. Treat for 3 days twice daily stop for 3 days and repeat for 3 days every month. Alternatively use one of the 2 nd generation spot ons that kills ear mites such as stronghold / revolution monthly on all in contacts.
Turn down the heating and keep the affected ears away from direct heat such as radiators and fires.
Please let us know how he gets on.

What are you feeding as lots of our Rotts seem to suffer with yeast problems and as many of the dog foods are cereal based this doesn't help at all.
Has he had a course of antibiotics for this at all to get it cleared. There is a superb product used now which is in the form of a gel that last several days before reapplying. It is a veterinary product not an over the counter.

Thanks Chico good to hear from you. I hope you are well and I thank you for your continuing support and valuable input.
Any chance of recalling the name of that product ?
Also I came across a lovely 2 12 yo Tibetan Mastif the other day. The owner is reluctantly having to sell him. Do you know of anyone looking for one ?

Hello Stuart....lost the page for a while but I'm back.

I don't know anyone for the Tibetan Mastiff offhand, but would first of all suggest they approach the breeder. A well bred dog should be on contract to go back to the breeder or for the breeder to find a home for him. Or to approach a TM rescue who will make sure the home is suitable. They are not an easy breed. (UK one below although I don't know them).

The ear treatment is called Osurnia and from what I've heard from our rescue who have used it they are getting good results and especially with dogs with ongoing problems.

I thought I left this for you Stuart as for vets only but it doesn't seem to have come out.
