Horses Tail ProblemsUnfortunately after travelling back from a show on sunday i forgot to take off my mares tail bandage, it was on for approximately 28 hours and as soon as i noticed i whipped it off! (she had a stable rug with a tail flap so i didnt notice it sooner!) There are a few sores underneath her tail and i was worried to begin with about circulation problems (she wouldnt let me touch her tail to begin with) However the end of her tail is body warm (not too hot) and she can still swish and move her tail as usual. What are the chances of gangrene setting in? She is uncomfortable with contact but i have just wondered if that is due to her sores. The sores are drying out, after being sprayed three times daily with antibacterial resin. Do you think there will be any lasting effects as her tail isnt particularly inflamed or scorching hot? Many thanks. 1/5/12 Answer this question |

ps we have all done it thankfully on a tail it is messy on a leg it can be catastrophic. All elasticated bandages should carry a dooineedavet warning" you will need a vet if you put it on too tight or leave it on too long "! 1/5/12 |

Thanks, do you think there will be any lasting damage? The bottom of her tail is warm so there should still be circulation. How long would it take for me to know if her tail was 'dead?' 1/5/12 |

never had one loose a tail yet s despite some fairly deep sloughs the blood supply to the distal tail is fairly deep and would need s serious tourniquet to occlude. Just keep your eyes and nose open for any signs of infection and use a garden plant pump 'Hozelock' spray to wash with saline (tablespoonful salt to a pint of water). 1/5/12 If this answer helped you, please consider donating to our website |

The sores look alright this morning too. They have scabbed over well and im continuing to spray them. How much feeling do horses have at the very bottom of their tail? Because Jasmine dosent seem to have any? Although its still warm. 3/5/12 |
