oh dear dirty rabbit!!

Hi i was hoping someone could share advice with me. my rabbit is gorgous but sometime lazy and doesnt always clean herself. last time it happened was last summer and before i could get her down to the vet she was struck with flystrike. after a huge vet bill she was fine but i had to clean her daily for a long time until she started doing it again. during this time she became agressive and withdrawn, and hated me! however i noticed yestereday when grooming her she hasnt cleaned herself, but i left it overnight to give her a chance to do so. this morning tho she hasnt and although the flys arent around im worried about infections and the reason shes not cleaning. she not obese and is a very active rabbit usually. i have 3 other rabbits and several guinea pigs and they dont have any problems

There are many reasons for a rabbit not cleaning itself properly. Any discomfort in the neck or back and problems with the teeth are among the most common. For this reason it is worth getting her checked out soon. In the mean time trim out her bottom thoroughly and bathe with salt and water. Dry WELL with towel paper towels and hair dryer and then apply a thin smear of vaseline making sure that the sphincter itself is lihtly coated. Then wash your hands well.
You are probably already aware that there is a preparation called Rearguard which helps to prevent fly-strike. It should be used as instructed throughout the time that houseflies are about. This period seems to be getting longer every year so use from March to October but if flies are about and you have not applied it go do it immediately. Remember rearguard does not help the root cause of the problem which should still be investigated.
