Cold or allergie?

I have taken into care,a Crimson Rossella,of doubious years.
His claws are overgrown but my worry is that he has developed funny breathing. His nostrels look blocked, but no discharge. He is not sneezing, but can only breath through his beak. When he is let out of his cage, he seens to panic.
I have been using newspaper in his cage.Could he be allergic to this? His droppings are watery. What is it?

Reaction to some of the chemicals used in forming newsprint may be involved. I suggest that it is time to arrenge to take this bird to a vet who specialises in treating cage birds. If you do not know of one locally try looking on the birdcare company web site.

Thanks,
my instinct was right, I thought it may be an allergic reaction to the newspaper. I have now put kitchen rool in the cage and he is back to his normal self. Full of beans and shouting as normal.
thanks any way...

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear he is ok. Did you find a vet interested in treating birds.

Have same problem, thought it too good to be true.
I live in the Coventry area, and do not know of a vet who deals with birds, the man who had him b4, took him to one and cut his claws bit too much and they bled. dont realy want to take him out in case he gets worse. do vets do home visits?

Try looking on the Birdcare Company Web Site. Sorry I have been a while in replying to this request. It is not unusual though obviously it is not desireable for the claws to bleed a bit after clipping. Some vets will do home visits obviously for a fee and all you can do is ask. Generally speaking it is a great deal easier to deal with any animal in the surgery as the assistance and equipment is available there and invariably on a home visit something you don't have is required. Most proceedures take a lot longer at home than they would in the surgery and this has also to be reflected in the charges.
Please let us know ho you get on.
